“When one teaches, two learn.”

Kayla’s teaching lives at the intersection of theatre education and community engagement.

She has worked as a teaching artist in a variety of settings including public schools, enrichment programs, non-profit theatre and community centers. She teaches students of all ages and abilities, from early childhood to adulthood.

Operating within a critically-oriented drama classroom, Kayla focuses on placing students experiences and interests a the helm, creating a student-centered, constructivist learning experience. She empowers her students to challenge their understanding of the work while fostering a deeper understanding of self and their greater community.

In the summers, Kayla spearheads a partnership with Boston Centers for Youth and Families at the Nazzaro Center, providing high-energy and engaging workshops for local North End children in all artistic disciplines from African Drumming to Creative Improvisation. She developed the curriculum and facilitated Maestros & Me, an outdoor, early childhood music program, where she implemented live music, movement, instruments and American Sign Language to aid the enhancement of fine motor skills and social emotional growth. Her bread and butter is devising with youth where she leads students through the process of conceptualizing, writing, designing and directing original work.

Kayla currently serves as NEMPAC’s Educational Program Coordinator, overseeing curriculum and program development of group instruction in music, dance and theatre, as well as free community programming efforts.

She is set to complete her MA/MFA in Theatre Education and Applied Theatre at Emerson College in Spring 2024.
